I’m going to Wichita

6 Feb

monument

All of us here in Baltimore are still living on cloud 9 because of the Ravens win!  Even though I’ve never exactly been a huge football fan, being from Baltimore and pretty much living here all my life- I am so happy that our home team won.  The last time they won I was a freshman in college and I’m pretty sure I was writing a paper that night.  Not this year!

I went to PBJ’s friends house and it’s always a great time with tons of food and drinks.  Do you know what viryta is? SO delicious but strong.  You can read about it here.  A little bit of yoga made an appearance as you can see.  It was  a great time and I always feel so lucky and grateful that I am surrounded by amazing people in my life.

ravens1

Needless to say- I think Baltimore is still recovering from the big party! I did watch part of the parade today and I think the ravens high is going to last for a while.  I made a Raven’s inspired playlist which is posted below.  We will see if I do any Beyoncé or Ray Lewis movies in class the rest of the week.

The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army
JAY-Z – Empire State Of Mind [Jay-Z + Alicia Keys] – Explicit Album Version
Beyoncé – Crazy In Love
cmafrnd1Nelly – Hot In Herre
Gary Glitter – Rock ‘n’ Roll (Part 2)
JAY-Z – Ni**as In Paris
Gym Class Heroes – The Fighter – feat. Ryan Tedder
Foo Fighters – My Hero
Blur – Song 2
The Rock Masters – Thunderstruck
Eddie Money – Two Tickets To Paradise – Album Verision
Journey – Don’t Stop Believin’
U2 – Where The Streets Have No Namecmafrnd2
JAY-Z – Otis
Alicia Keys – Girl On Fire
The Hours – Ali In The Jungle
Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight
Beyoncé – Halo
Queen – We Are The Champions

And the icing on the cake- if you haven’t seen the Ray Lewis skit from SNL here you go.  Hilarious.

Black tie and staying present

30 Jan

bmore1Hi friends- can you believe the warm temperatures?!? I can’t.  I love it so much, but I also find it kind of scary with global warming how it’s snowing and icing one day and then almost 70 degrees the next.  I’ve been meaning to get this post up earlier but alas, here it is.  On Saturday night I got to attend The Enoch Pratt Library’s Black and White Party.  It was an amazing event.  They hold this party every year and raise money for the library and for their children’s and teen literacy efforts.

pratt1

But what made this event more special for me was that my mom used to work at the central branch when I was younger.  Actually my sister and I were on a poster for the library when we were four.  I tried to find the poster at my parents house but no luck.  I will show it you I promise!  So there was food, wine from The Wine Source, and a special beer crafter by The Brewer’s Art (love!) called The Nutty Pratt Ale.

PBJ and I were in our finest and hung out with his friends. They had a Great Gatsby theme and were even playing the original film in the av room. It was an amazing time and I ran into people I went to high school with, friends from yoga, and local news casters. I hope we go again next year. And fyi- if you want to go next year, the tickets sell out very quickly!!

This was my lunch today- vegan, gluten free, soy free.  I know it doesn’t look very pretty but it was tasty.

In the mix was:

quinoa, spinach, black beans, garbanzo beans, polenta, onion (all sautéed with a bit of olive oil), garlic, salt and pepper to taste.  All organic too!

Here are the cat pictures you guys wanted.  I have yet to actually capture them in their cat yoga poses. Lol

Always sleeping.  Must be nice.

So I  recorded a Raven’s inspired yoga sequence for you but I’m not savvy enough to figure out how to upload it.   I will try to record a video for you so you’ll have a sequence! A few of you wrote to me on facebook telling me what you would like to see on the blog and one of the topics was staying present in my own practice.  Well- the real honest answer is that you’re not always going to be 100% present in your own practice.  Our minds naturally wander and as busy human beings in a society that encourages us to keep pushing and doing all the time, it’s quite challenging to find that still place.  But the key to all of that- including being present in your own practice- is being aware of the fact that your mind, thoughts, and intentions do wander.  Instead of criticizing your self that oh I’m not focusing enough on my warrior 2- being ok and accepting the fact that, yeah, my thigh is burning and I’m feeling hungry.  It’s OK! But realizing that and then regaining your focus is what’s most important.  The other thing is that my own practice doesn’t have barriers, restraints, or fit into some box of what I think it should be or look like.  Everyday is different and just like life, my yoga practice is always changing.  And yours should too.  Being present means being awake, being vibrant, and being OK with whatever it is that shows up- not matter what it looks like.

I hope you’re having a great week!  Time for me to face plant into bed!

I also wanted to show you guys another yoga clothing company I am working with Aaluuka clothing company. Like other yoga clothing; they specialize in taking yourself from your mat- to the street while looking stylish the whole time.  They sent me their Essential Tank and I love it!  Slim fitting but not too tight, supportive, great fabric (sweat wicking), and stays down when you practice!

003

Oh hi there.  How is your week?  Mine hasn’t been too eventful and the weekend is quickly approaching but that’s the way I like it.  How about you?  The weather’s been pretty nice and I just cannot believe it’s spring!  I’m already making plans for months from now and I cannot believe summer is around the corner!  That also means my big 3-0 Smile

Here’s a recipe for you:

005006

008 010

Sautee some chickpeas (garbanzo beans rinsed and drained) with olive oil.

Add onion and spinach till everything is cooked down. Add salt, pepper, garlic, to taste.

Add sprouts (I used alfalfa) and some chopped avocado into a separate bowl and then add cooked beans, onions, and spinach mix.

Top with goat cheese if you like!  All kind of random ingredients but it was pretty tasty.

I seem to have almost all of these ingredients on hand most of them time which makes throwing it all together really convenient.  I haven’t bought cheese in a few months as I’ve really tried to cut out almost all dairy and I thought starting with a little goat cheese would be a good start.

These are my friends Melissa and Brian.  They just moved to Hawaii.  I miss you guys already and I wish you nothing but the best!  You both deserve it so much!

And I will be coming to Hawaii thank you very much.

These are a few pics from their going away happy hour which was at La Scala last weekend.

I’ve only been to La Scala one other time- but if you go on Sunday’s between 4 and 8pm you can get $6 wines and appetizers.  Very tasty if you’re interested.

Vibrant and authentic

22 Jan

008Hi! Are you happy it’s Saturday?  I am.  And it snowed.  Well it snowed a little bit so that meant I stayed inside. Pretty much all day.  Life is good I tell you.

How is your weekend unfolding?  Did you shovel snow?  Or did you have a bed day? Kimberly Wilson talks about that in her books- it’s a day where you stay in bed; read, email, talk on the phone, eat, sleep, snuggle- all of that from bed.  Sounds good to me.

Here’s some pictures to show you what my day looked like.

A little of this:

002 003

Yes I have flannel sheets on my bed and that spray water bottle is for when he’s not being so cute and cuddly.  If you have a cat- you know what I’m talking about.

012 013

All those veggies into juice.  Yes I drank it.

019

Lets see- organic spinach, 1 hardboiled egg, garbanzo beans, tuna, onion, avocado-maybe I’m forgetting something.  A little Greek dressing.  It was good Smile

020

Things for goodwill!

005006

All in all a good day I think.

I stayed in last night and I had a few moments of feeling like I was boring and lame because I wasn’t going out, but that quickly passed as I realized that we all need down time.  Time to organize, reflect, and relax.

So we are almost at February and 2012 is in full force.  I’ve read a few blogs recently that talked about how we can choose to live our lives.  One talked about your influence on other people-basically that smiling and being kind to a complete stranger can open up so many possibilities.  Possibilities for you to find joy, kindness, happiness in your own life- you know what I’m talking about. We can choose to find happiness in our own lives.  We can make decisions to move us forwards to the life that we really want.

All of that started to make me think about my work and my life and what it exactly is that I strive to do and who I am striving to be.  I want to be kinder and more loving.  I want to be authentic.

(source)

The answers to questions about who we are, what we want to become, how can we live a vibrant and creative life don’t just necessarily show up when we want them to.  So here are some questions you can ask yourself if you’re thinking the same things (because now that you’re reading this you probably are).

  • If time, money, education, experience, we no issue and you have zero constraints in the world, what would you do?
  • What are you really grateful for?
  • What’s one thing you’d choose to do or purse if you knew you couldn’t fail?
  • Name 8 of the most valuable things in your life
  • What do you really want to have?
  • Who do you really want to be?

There is no one answer to these questions.  There’s no right answer.  These are just some tools to get you thinking.  I’m thinking about them too and writing it all down.  And maybe next month they’ll be a little different and that’s ok.

Everyday, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it.  I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others; to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.  I am going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am not going to get angry or think badly about others.  I am going to benefit others as much as I can.  ~Dalia Lama

Take the time to stop.  Breathe.  Smile.  Laugh.  Let go of a grudge.  Let go of anger.  Turn off the tv.  Plant something.  Bake something.  Hug someone.  Be grateful.  Live in the moment.

Happy Saturday <3

Where I’ve been

15 Dec

064Hiiii- long time no see.  I know I know.  But just like everyone else- the holidays are a crazy busy time.  Here’s an update with lots of pics!  I promise more tomorrow!

I hope you’re all having an amazing week and are staying calm and cool during what always seems to be a little bit of a chaotic time.

Now this is going back a bit- but- I went to the BaltimOrganic Farm.

I saw my twitter friends and lots of people from high school and yoga- pretty much all of Baltimore. I was sweating bullets with that scarf on when there were swarms of people but the second they left- freezing cold!

I taught yoga at Lululemon in Baltimore- and made them all take pictures with me.

047

I met Thais!!  We just used to be twitter buddies but she came to see me from Fredrick!  I’m hopefully going to get her to do a guest blog post for me soon- but in the meantime please read her blog.

And on top of teaching, teaching in the teacher training, and a million other things- I got ready for the holidays!

Things that weren’t documented were helping my sister move- no words can even begin to describe the rather hellacious ordeal.  Moving kind of brings out the worst in me.

And on a lighter note- I have been chosen by Baltimore Magazine as one of their Top Singles of 2012!  Very exciting and I get to be in the magazine in their February issue.   You can check out more here.

With that- I’m going to bed.  See you tomorrow!!

A little update

9 Nov

070

Hi! How is your week going??

Things are good here.  Busy teaching, working out, seeing friends, etc.  I’m finally getting back into the swing of things as far as working out goes.  3 yoga classes and 2 gym jaunts last week.  Hurts so good! But this probably has to do  with going to bed earlier, eating a lot of vegetarian food, not drinking too much wine Smile all that.  I still feel like the working out is kind of going slowly but it’s better than nothing which is always good right?

Here’s a little recap of what’s been going on in my world.

On Saturday Chris, her sister Carrie, and I took a drive to Black Ankle Vineyard in Mt Airy Maryland.  It was such a gorgeous day and I have heard a lot about their wines.

Taken from their website:

017

t Black Ankle Vineyards, we believe that the beautiful rolling hills of Maryland are perfectly suited to yield wines of great complexity, subtlety and nuance—wines that can compare favorably with the finest Europe has to offer. A truly great wine comes only from a truly great vineyard, and we believe that our mix of soils, climate, grape varieties, viticulture, personal commitment, and a bit of magic have been the secret to creating some wonderful wines, but don’t take our word for it—come out and try them for yourself

008 002003 004007 071

I’m just letting the pictures explain themselves!  You can see it was a fun time Smile

072073

074I will tell you the Chris and Carrie packed an amazing little picnic that had amazing homemade flax and spelt bread, hard boiled eggs, smoked salmon from Pikes Market in Seattle, yummy spicy mustard from France, avocado, Chris’s homemade peach preserves, pomegranate seeds…I know- amazing!

076012014013

I like to take pictures- can you tell?

077I also got myself up out of bed to go to the Baltimore farmer’s market underneath 83.  I was so happy I got myself up to get my veggies for the week.  People always try to get me to go with them to go hang out, get breakfast and coffee at the market, but I don’t do that.  I don’t go to hang out. I get my kale and get out.  Lol But this is also in part that I see TOO many people I know and well- I don’t feel like chatting with the whole world when it’s 8 am on Sunday.

But look what I got for $20!

020

I would’ve gotten more but my arms would’ve broken off in the walk back to my apartment! And I was already hurrying to go to body pump with M at the gym.  And then my arms really hurt.

018 For $20 I got beets, a dozen organic, cage free eggs, 2 lbs. of kale, 1 huge bag of spinach, 2 heads of romaine lettuce, 1 medium butternut squash, 2 heads of broccoli (I froze one), and 4 little onions.  A lot of this is for juicing but I’ve already told you it’s important to eat your veggies (especially because your mother told you to) and it’s even better to know where your food came from- and not on a truck in Cali!

085

Drink your juiceeeeeeee

Ok just a few more pictures for your entertainment!

Even though I’m not a ravens fan- I did watch us crush the Steelers at the last second.

These are all from the iphone so they probably won’t look perfect.

All the biracial ladies Smile

091

And yes we take pictures in the bathroom at Mother’s (and a side note- I am TOO OLD to be going to a place like that!)

088

Yes my hair is straight and yes I’m growing it until I cant stand it anymore!

Ok- now you’re updated on my life!

Last week I talked about being thankful and every time I turn on the tv, go into a store or anything- it’s all about Christmas! I mean- I love the holidays and everything but shouldn’t we go in order and take the time to be appreciative of what we have? I think yes.  So with that being said,  today I’m thankful for good food, good friends, and of course good wine.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life.  When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.  I wrote down ‘happy’.  They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.  ~John Lennon

A little bit of chaos

9 Oct

008Hi! How are you???? This week has definitely been a crazy whirlwind rollercoaster so I am glad it’s the weekend!  No real plans here though which is nice.  I went Pazo last night for dinner, sipped some bubbly and indulged in some yummy hummus.  Then I headed to Kooper’s Tavern with friends to hear my friend Steve’s band play.  They were amazing as always.  And today was spent family bonding with M, my mom, and my grandmother going to TJ Maxx and Costco.  Fun times.  Let’s just say I’m tired after that.  Lol.

My friend Heather’s son Regan is doing better.  He is stable after they removed part of his skull to help ease with some of the swelling and are slowing taking down the sedation.  Heather is doing better too which makes me so happy.  Going to the hospital was rough and I definitely had a rollercoaster of emotions going on this week! I am just still hoping and praying that he comes out of all of this ok.  There is a website that now has a calendar of food donations for Heather and her family (she has 2 other children!) if you know her and would like to help out.  Type in Keller and the password is yoga.  Let me know if you have questions.  But please continue to keep my friend and her family in your thoughts and prayers and send them good vibes!

So- this week also included this:

002

On the right is the most amazing curried tofu salad that I have ever had from Wegmas.  So good I tell you!  I need to know how to make it.  And then on the left was some sort of chickpea salad.  Yummm all around.

I also went to zumba this week of course.

004

Cynthia is the most amazing teacher ever!!! And she can booty shake like no one else.  Winking smile

And of course all my zumba buddies were there.

007

Let’s just say that the random girl I asked to take our picture didn’t really want to.  Lol.

And look what I got!

011

One of my yoga students brought it to me and she said that my class on Friday mornings was the favorite part if her week! So sweet.

009

Hi Kerry!!!

And to top the week off I had to take little precious to the vet!  I thought he maybe was having some flea issues, so I gave him a treatment and then he was still gnawing at his hind leg.  So what do I do? I go to tarjay, I bought him some flea spray, I spray it on him at home, and what happens? Oh yeah- one of the side effects is massive salivation! Did that happen? Yes.  So I and holding him underneath the faucet in the tub and he’s wailing like I’m killing him.  I call the vet and they told me that the product that I used was the worst one ever and that it was like poison.  Then why the hell do they sell it at the store!?!? God only knows.  All in all- he’s fine.  More traumatized by the water, being forced in the carrying cage, and riding in the car.  Poor thing.

003

So lot’s of ups and downs this week as you can see!  I hope you all are having a fantastic weekend and savoring every moment!!

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

**Something to think about**

When I was pulling up to the gym tonight- the song All you need is love by the Beatles came on the radio.  I immediately started smiling and of course singing a long.  That song has sentimental meaning to me and one of those is that I grew up listening to the Beatles.  Another is that I got to see LOVE in Las Vegas a few years and that was an experience I will never forget.

love

But it’s really the lyrics that made me think- even after all the hundreds of times I’ve heard the song.

Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love. There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done. Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung. Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game It’s easy.

There’s nothing you can make that can’t be made. No one you can save that can’t be saved. Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time – It’s easy.

All you need is love, all you need is love, All you need is love, love, love is all you need. Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love. All you need is love, all you need is love, All you need is love, love, love is all you need.

There’s nothing you can know that isn’t known. Nothing you can see that isn’t shown. Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be. It’s easy.

All you need is love, all you need is love, All you need is love, love, love is all you need. All you need is love (all together now) All you need is love (everybody) All you need is love, love, love is all you need. ~Lennon and McCartney

I think when you surround yourself in a loving environment- with friends, family, the pets, food, and home(mine is with a lot of warm blankets, scented candles, healthy food, and a lint roller for the cat hair!) that comforts you- at the end of the day you can’t help but feel the LOVE yourself.  Right?  At least that’s how I feel.  Even when you have those bad days or dark moments, you can still take the time at the end of it all to realize that life is precious and that it is GOOD.  We are all given the opportunity to lead blissfully happy and full lives.  You just have to choose to jump in feet first and enjoy it! Because like the song says:

There’s nothing you can make that can’t be made. No one you can save that can’t be saved. Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time – It’s easy. ~John Lennon and Paul McCartney

You just have to be willing to choose love and realize that you don’t only need to give it, but you deserve to have it too. Chase your dreams, achieve your goals, figure out how you want to live your life- for you.  At least that’s what I think.

Time for me to faceplant into bed!

Love love love, C

Recap

19 Sep

002

Hi! How was your weekend??? Things have been pretty low key here and I like it that way.  I am LOVING this cool weather.  But I will probably be the first one to complain when it gets a few degrees cooler. But I’m just lounging around tonight and I love it.

003

Hi Monica, Lauren, and Meghan!

Here’s a bit of a recap of what I’ve been up to for the past few days!

001

I’ve been making lot’s of things with basil.  This is from my own plant that is still growing on my fire escape.  I made pesto tonight.  So quick, easy, and good.  I also have been putting basil leaves and lemon in water.  So good!

007

I met this dog the other night at The Owl Bar in Mt Vernon.  Her name is Karma of all things.  She’s a service dog that actually works a lot with veterans.  This was the sweetest and most loving dog I have ever met.  I wanted to take her home with me- of course.  Her tag says: Karma the Wonderdog.  She’s precious!

 013

Ok and I have t to show you this orchid that my dad has raised.  I know it may be hard to see- but those string like things are actually long petals!  28 inch long petals.  Isn’t it crazy?? It’s called a Pathieopedilum Sanderianum and it’s from Borneo.  Crazy!

017

I spent Saturday with my parents and sis at a going away party for our Friend Clarke.  He’s joining the Marine Corps to become a pilot.

016 021

022 023

Of course I almost started to cry when Clarke’s mom was giving her toast.

025

God I look like my dad.  Lol

Check out the cake:

014

And their dog:

018

Precious!!

Clarke- all the best of luck to you!!!

So I’ve been thinking a lot about the word intention.  In yoga classes, we talk a lot about intention or your intent for the class.  An intention can be a goal or just a though of something you want to accomplish.  Our lives are busy and full of check lists, to do lists, spending time with friends, family, working, and all kinds of other things that we can feel overwhelmed.  Then where does your intention go?  Umm out the window.

I recently put one of my personal intentions on my bathroom mirror.  So instead of forgetting what I want and turning on the mental chatter that we all have in our heads, I’m forced to remind myself of what I want to happen.  By simply putting the words out there you intention can become reality.  Ask for what you want.

I know a lot of people think it’s a bunch of fluff when you talk about saying things out loud to the universe, but I think when you verbally saying what is it that you want or write it down and see it, it’s a way to put your goals into action.  You can’t run a marathon without training and you can’t get a new job without applying for one.

So what is it that you want? Are you ready to put it out there? Live your life and make your dreams happen! It’s cheesy- but if you don’t do it now, when will you?

Time for me to watch another episode of Law and Order: SVU…why am I obsessed with that show??

xoxo, C
