Spotlight: Ashley Dodd

27 Feb

Hi friends- Happy Wednesday!  Thank you so much for all the sweet messages about my last post and my aunt.  Life is really hard sometimes so it’s important to remember how good it really is.

meHere’s another spotlight post on a fabulous lady.  Here’s  my friend Ashley Dodd.  She actually just moved to Baltimore from Annapolis and we randomly met at the movies.  And then on top of that- she and M went to college together and actually had a class together.  The world is so small- especially here in Baltimore.  In addition to being a yogini and aspiring yoga teacher, Ashley also has a passion for drawing, painting, playing the piano, she’s a huge music lover (she goes to tons of concerts and I’m always jealous), a foodie, animal lover, nature lover, and she totally adores her family (especially her nephews).

1. How does yoga help you to express who you are and who you want to be?

Practicing yoga has allowed me to begin to understand not only who I am but who I want to be. When on the mat I am my truest self – strong yet vulnerable, ad2determined yet humbled, focused yet inquisitive. Yoga has shown me that no matter my level of knowledge, I am always a student, looking to further unfold and deepen the layers of my practice both on and off the mat.

2. What important lessons have you learned about yourself through your yoga practice?

When I first starting practicing yoga it was merely a means of exercise – a way to increase balance and flexibility. Since rediscovering my practice, yoga has evolved into an entire lifestyle as opposed to a form of exercise. Aside from the obvious physical benefits brought on from my practice (increased flexibility, strength, etc.), yoga has completely transformed my life. It has brought balance ad5to areas of my life that were previously in complete disarray; it has brought clarity to my mind, and has begun to really teach me how to live a compassionate life. It has humbled me in ways I never thought possible, shown me that my potential is limitless, and demonstrated that in moments of challenge nothing is as important as the breath. I believe that yoga is a metaphor to life, and through continual practice I can sustain my mind, body, and spirit.

3. What’s your favorite pose? Why?

cadParsva Bakasana (side crow) is a pose that I wanted to figure out for so long. I would see students in intermediate and advanced classes do the pose, and could not figure out how to physically get there. I assumed it was just too challenging for me and decided to practice with the goal of being able to reach and sustain this pose. One day a friend broke the pose down for and when I went home that afternoon, it just clicked and I was able to take my body there for the first time. To me, this pose requires not only strength of the body but strength of the mind – to concentrate and sustain, and most importantly to breathe.

ad14. What inspires you?

I am truly inspired by the little things happening in world around me. The changing of the seasons, the singing of the birds, the sound of a strangers laughter; they all remind me how beautiful life is and inspire me to continue finding joy and bliss in all things and all situations.

5. How did you get into yoga and what made you want to become a yoga teacher?

I have had an interesting yoga journey so far in life. I first began practicing in 2004 and practiced on a “somewhat” regular basis for about 5 years. I always stuck to beginner classes because I was too afraid to challenge myself or explore my edge. I practiced until late 2009 when I completely stopped – I was going adogsthrough a much unexpected and incredibly challenging life change and felt the need to completely alter my life from what I knew…this included yoga. I took about 8 months off until I realized that an integral part of my life was missing, and this was my yoga practice. I slowly began to practice again and have had a consistent practice for about 3 year now. Last year is when I finally broke down my personal barrier and began to explore where I could take my practice, and how I could incorporate yoga into my life while off the mat. The desire to further deepen my practice and walk the yogic path inspired me to register for teacher training with Charm City Yoga in early 2013 (yay!). I cannot wait to experience the journey, to see where I am taken from here, and to share my love of the practice with the community.

6. How will you incorporate your yoga teaching into your career.

I am not currently a teacher but continually work to incorporate yoga into my daily life. I work in a fast paced environment at a web design firm and feel like I am always on the go. My work life is the opposite of yoga, where strength is found within stillness, silence is encouraged, and focus on the breath is required. Through yogic teachings I have managed to find greater balance in life whether I’m in my office, at home, or on the mat. Yoga has pushed me to better myself and has opened me up to people and experiences that I now cannot imagine my life without. It has also taught me that no matter what is going on, to take a step back, regain focus, and most importantly to just breathe.

Black tie and staying present

30 Jan

bmore1Hi friends- can you believe the warm temperatures?!? I can’t.  I love it so much, but I also find it kind of scary with global warming how it’s snowing and icing one day and then almost 70 degrees the next.  I’ve been meaning to get this post up earlier but alas, here it is.  On Saturday night I got to attend The Enoch Pratt Library’s Black and White Party.  It was an amazing event.  They hold this party every year and raise money for the library and for their children’s and teen literacy efforts.

pratt1

But what made this event more special for me was that my mom used to work at the central branch when I was younger.  Actually my sister and I were on a poster for the library when we were four.  I tried to find the poster at my parents house but no luck.  I will show it you I promise!  So there was food, wine from The Wine Source, and a special beer crafter by The Brewer’s Art (love!) called The Nutty Pratt Ale.

PBJ and I were in our finest and hung out with his friends. They had a Great Gatsby theme and were even playing the original film in the av room. It was an amazing time and I ran into people I went to high school with, friends from yoga, and local news casters. I hope we go again next year. And fyi- if you want to go next year, the tickets sell out very quickly!!

This was my lunch today- vegan, gluten free, soy free.  I know it doesn’t look very pretty but it was tasty.

In the mix was:

quinoa, spinach, black beans, garbanzo beans, polenta, onion (all sautéed with a bit of olive oil), garlic, salt and pepper to taste.  All organic too!

Here are the cat pictures you guys wanted.  I have yet to actually capture them in their cat yoga poses. Lol

Always sleeping.  Must be nice.

So I  recorded a Raven’s inspired yoga sequence for you but I’m not savvy enough to figure out how to upload it.   I will try to record a video for you so you’ll have a sequence! A few of you wrote to me on facebook telling me what you would like to see on the blog and one of the topics was staying present in my own practice.  Well- the real honest answer is that you’re not always going to be 100% present in your own practice.  Our minds naturally wander and as busy human beings in a society that encourages us to keep pushing and doing all the time, it’s quite challenging to find that still place.  But the key to all of that- including being present in your own practice- is being aware of the fact that your mind, thoughts, and intentions do wander.  Instead of criticizing your self that oh I’m not focusing enough on my warrior 2- being ok and accepting the fact that, yeah, my thigh is burning and I’m feeling hungry.  It’s OK! But realizing that and then regaining your focus is what’s most important.  The other thing is that my own practice doesn’t have barriers, restraints, or fit into some box of what I think it should be or look like.  Everyday is different and just like life, my yoga practice is always changing.  And yours should too.  Being present means being awake, being vibrant, and being OK with whatever it is that shows up- not matter what it looks like.

I hope you’re having a great week!  Time for me to face plant into bed!

Yoga, art, and average Joe

20 Jan woods

Hi my friends- I hope you had a great week and are totally enjoying your weekend.  Things have been going pretty well on my side.  My yoga classes have been really packed and I am so enjoying meeting new students.  PBJ and I have also been hanging out with friends and loving life. Here are some pics from the last week!

clfloodcotoctain

cgreen

So as you can see- there’s been yummy food (cucumber salsa, quinoa with squash, carrots, onion, chickpeas, and avocado and some sort of apple pie something or other but it wasn’t really pie- I’m awaiting the recipes), hiking at Catoctain mountain park, green smoothies (every day this week!), a new yoga mat to test out from Under Amour and pictures of my parents and I with my twin sis from the way back machine.  There are many more that I have to save in order not to embarrass anyone.

I had the privilege of being invited this past Friday to the Smithsonian Freer-Sackler Museum of Asian Art  with numerous other Baltimore and DC yogis, yoginis, studio owners, and the lovely people of Lululemon to talk about an amazing art exhibit that will be opening in October called Yoga: The Art of Transformation.  The exhibit is going to feature paintings, sculptures, and photography from the 3rd century until about the early 1940’s- and .  My friends Amelia and Sarah went with me and we got to be part of the creative team who brainstorms about the events surrounding the exhibition and how they can actually make the show an experience.

But what really intrigued me most was being in a room full of people who live and breathe in the yoga world- I was the one to bring up how an exhibit like this and the yoga practice itself can bring in average Joe off the street.  Average Joe or Joan (for the ladies) doesn’t think they are flexible enough, they’re afraid and well, maybe they just aren’t interested in yoga.  I grew up taking dance and gymnastics so yoga was a natural fit for me.  Yoga studios make a lot of marketing efforts to bring in new students every  month, but only 50% of them return on a regular basis.  So how can we get the average Joe’s and Joan’s into yoga? I don’t know if there is one particular answer but I think letting people know not only the physical benefits but the mental ones (hello stress relief!) and that taking a few moments of quiet, sitting still, and breathing deeply can really help.

I will definitely let you know when the events surrounding the exhibit are happening because I will be there for sure.

I hope you’re enjoying your weekend!  GO RAVENS!!!

Hi my blog lovelies- I hope you’re having a great week.  I know the year just started but I feel like my weeks and weekends are getting filled up already.  This weekend is going to be jam packed.  Ravens game, birthday dinner for a friend, hiking (because it’s supposed to be almost 70 degrees!).  Life is good.

_____________________________________________________

I want to introduce to you my dear friend and fellow yoga teacher Michelle Cagan.  She is not only one of the sweetest and kindest people I know, but she is also a fantastic yoga teacher, spin and Pilates instructor, and a Lululemon Ambassador here in Baltimore.  Here’s my spotlight post on Michelle!

1.  How does yoga help you to express who you are and who you want to be?

Living a yogic lifestyle has allowed me a greater understanding of how to reach my potential. I simply aspire to live a spiritual life and be the best person that I can be. My biggest inspiration is my family, and I want to be a good example for my children.

michelle32. What important lessons have you learned about yourself through your yoga practice?

Through yoga, I have learned first and foremost that it is ok not to be perfect, and that I NEVER will be. Being awake in the present moment, on and off my mat, is essential to living a most gratifying life.

3. What’s your favorite pose? Why?

Eka Pada Rajakapotasana- One Legged King Pigeon

I enjoy the surrender, stretch and openings of the pose. It typically comes toward the end of the asana practice, and marries the balance of effort and non-effort. Also, the variations are challenging and fun.

michelle5

4. What inspires you?

Honesty, kindness, and generosity of spirit are important, but mostly my children inspire me!

5. How did you get into yoga and what made you want to become a yoga teacher?

After practicing on and off for several years, a vigorous power vinyasa flow brought me to a regular practice. My Mother had passed away very suddenly leaving me feeling lost, depressed and extremely confused. After such a huge wake up call that life is precious and fleeting, yoga channeled my energy and feelings toward making my life and my family life better. Yoga improved my life in more ways than words can express and I wanted to share my passion with others through teaching. Being a part of the yoga community allows us to feel that we are not alone and can be there for each other. That is what drew me to teach.

michelle46. How will you incorporate your yoga teaching into your career?

I taught Pilates and Spinning prior to teaching yoga. I believe that teaching yoga is my calling, and now incorporate its teaching in all of my classes.

Here’s the list of Michelle’s public classes- She teaches at The MAC and at Charm City Yoga

To be or not to be: aware

12 Nov

cjHi friends- did you have a great weekend? Tomorrow is Monday and I am already thinking about next weekend- but that’s mainly because my college roommate J is coming!!  So exciting!!! I tried to find a picture of us from college but- well I didn’t want to mjembarrass either one of us.  But this is from 5 years ago! Anyway- she, M, and I laugh like we’re all sisters.  We’re already laughing just thinking about all of our fun times together.  Can’t wait!

ckI spent my weekend at the 500 hour yoga teacher training (we are almost finished!!) and every time I come back with some many new tidbits to bring to my classes and more inspiration.  And not to mention I have become so close with some amazing people!

Aside from learning more advanced poses, a lot of focus has been on breath work and meditation and then through that- awareness.  The whole process of awareness is really fascinating to me so I thought I would take some time to talk about my own journey and thoughts about it.

I’ve been teaching yoga for over six years now and practicing for about 8.  Yoga used to be something that was really purely physical for me.  I’ve been the bendy one always wanting something harder, faster, more handstands, more upside down, more backbends.  There’s still a big part of me that wants that, but it’s been so interesting to see myself not crave that so much and really be able to tap into what my body needs- without judgment.  Skipping a backbend or doing more restorative poses when I know I need it.  It takes practice to notice that and then to actually put that into action.

Being truly aware means not judging, finding compassion, and accepting yourself for who you are right now, today, and tomorrow no matter what.

This is obviously easier said than done.  Every day we judge ourselves.  Every day we create our own suffering, pain, anxiety, and worry because we create the idea that what it is we are experiencing should be different than what it really is.  We want to control what’s happening, we want to be able to fix or change it, and then we are attached to the outcome.  I know this is sounding all too familiar because we all do this.  But starting to notice it can really be freeing.

So how do we start to be aware? By finding stillness.  Try to start with 5-10 minutes sitting in a comfortable position closing the eyes.  Take 3 deep breaths and just start to let yourself settle in to stillness.  Yes your mind is going to wander and yes, it might be uncomfortable to sit in a cross legged position but for this to be successful is that you are purely being aware that you mind is wandering or that your leg is asleep.  That’s really simply the point.  To notice and be OK with the way it is.  Can you hold an intense yoga pose?  Another way of starting to find awareness is tapping into your edge in your yoga practice- I’d say hip openers are a good one.  Start to breathe in the pose and just notice.  Are you in your comfy place? Or are you finding your edge and being OK with some discomfort (without going to the place of injury) and staying in it without going too far or hanging back.

Once you have this practice- this will start to transfer to your everyday life.  Are you noticing your tendencies when your sitting in traffic and running late? When you want to lash out or complain about your boss? When your criticizing the way you look? I think it’s really important to be tuned into finding the balance of striving too much or not enough and then coming back to that place of acceptance without having to do anything else but just be.  When you become aware/awake/alert to these things we can start to realize that the universe (or god or whatever higher power you like to believe in) accepts us for who we are- flaws and all, good days and bad days.

I think you get the gist- and there is so much more I could say but I’d love for you to give it a try.  There’s nothing to fix and there’s nothing to change.  See if you can be content- even for a moment.

I hope you had a great weekend and are ready for the week ahead.  Can you believe Thanksgiving is almost here???  Time is going by way too fast.

I’m planning a post where I can answer any questions you have to please ask away- it can be about food, music, yoga, Baltimore, family- anything!

Good times

30 May picstitch (17)

Hiiii my friends- I hope you had a fantastic holiday weekend.  Mine was pretty calm and relaxing but it’s still nice to have a short week! My schedule has been jammed packed with a lot of work but I have still managed to have a good time.

picstitch (2)

I went to the O’s vs Red Sox game last week and it was a great time.  I hadn’t been to a game all season and I LOVE go to O’s games (even though sometimes we aren’t very good lol).  I think it’s all about the atmosphere…and the beer and food.

My friend let’s just call him big C sometimes gets tickets through his work and the seats were amazing!

picstitch (4)

I felt bad for these poor people in these outfits.  It was hot and I hope they were getting paid a lot.

picstitch (5)

It was definitely a great time.  A few of you asked about my jersey- I am pretty sure it’s a boys XL from Target.  Much cheaper and cuter than the other random ones that they say are made for women.

I went to Shepherdstown, West Virginia on Friday to take an acro yoga workshop with Vanessa King.  Vanessa was an awesome teacher and while I felt like there were challenging aspects to the class- it was totally available for all levels.  The class was held at Jala Yoga which my close friend Christa owns.  If you ever have to chance to go to Shepherdstown- you totally have to go. The studio is totally warm and everyone is super friendly and the town is really cute. Take a class from Christa and then check out Mellow Moods Juice Bar which is located underneath the studio.

jalaacro

(that’s me in the pink and Vanessa is in the backbend)

I also spent some time with my family this weekend at my uncles bbq and celebrated my granny’s birthday.

picstitch (8)

I pretty much broke all of my dietary restrictions at the cookout and am kicking myself about it now.

I also tried to teach my little cousin some yoga poses but the pictures didn’t come out so well.  It’s so funny because kids loooove to learn especially when you try to teach them something physical.  But I find it so interesting that little kids can’t quite balance.

picstitch (9)They’re super bendy, but they can’t stay still.  I kept yelling statue! He tried.  I guess it takes a while for some of those fine motor skills to be fully developed.  And note my hair getting progressively bigger in every picture.

Lastly I worked on my fire escape garden.  Wait till you see the pictures.  When I lived with my sis in Canton a few years ago, we actually lived in a house and I had lovely plants outside of out place.  Flowers and everything.  They looked great.  And then I moved to an apartment on a 4th floor walk up.

picstitch (7)

Yeah- weeds took over!  Look how bad they looked! I spent a little over an hour sweating, weeding, and listening to the Pandora summer oldies station- praying no one was watching me.

picstitch (14)

I don’t know if any of you garden (on your stoop, with pots, in a backyard etc) but I really love getting my hands dirty, planting something, and watching it grow.  I’ve been looking out my windows ever since impatiently waiting for things to grow.

picstitch (6)

Things are a bit more organized now as you can see.  I have a few flowers to plant that my mom bough for me.  But I planted 2 basil plants (gluten free pesto pizza yes please), cilantro, mint, parsley, and rosemary.  So good.  Last year I had a tomato as well as pepper plant but, sadly I don’t eat those anymore.

picstitch (15)

Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds, the harvest can either be flowers or weeds.  Wisdom is oftentimes nearer when we stoop than when we soar.  ~William Wordsworth

picstitch (16)The pic above is everything weeded and nicely planted.  Now just cross your fingers for perfect pesto, grilled veggies, and salmon!

I hope you all had a great weekend.  Mine was sealed off with a nice date night with Brad Pitt while having some of these.

I have to say- amidst the chaos, craziness, business, and fun- my life is good and I feel totally blessed and lucky to have to the life I have- even with all of it’s ups and downs (and this is probably because I know now how to handle the downs a little better than beforeWinking smile).

This is the beginning of a new day.  You have been given this day to use as you will.  You can wasted it or use it for good.  What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it.  When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something that you have left behind…let it be good.  ~Unk.

Weekend Roundup

21 May Baltimore

HI there- how was your weekend?  I have been going, going going, for about two months now and a break is finally on the horizon!  I’m already thinking about the holiday weekend! My past week has been a whirlwind.  But- this week will be promising with and O’s game, time with friends, yoga teaching and taking, and a few days off!  Woohoo!

I’ve been sipping some juice again.

picstitch (8)

The one on the left is kale, cucumber, apple, and carrot.  Pretty tasty.  On the right- courtesy of Trader Joe’s.  Love that place.

I’ve haven’t been juicing a ton because in all honesty- it’s a mess and pain to clean the juicer.  But I am hoping to get some fresh greens this week and make more.  When my work schedule is crazy I tend to ride the caffeine train hard and I have been steadily slowing that down.  Homemade iced half caf with coconut milk is currently my best friend.  So good.

picstitch (6)

I’ve also been getting my sweat on.

I wanted to take more gym pics- but I also didn’t want to be one of those people. Lol.

I spent my weekend with my 500 hour ytt’s at Charm City Yoga and as always- it was a great time.  I am teaching in as well as participating in the training and I absolutely love every single person in the group.

And even though I am one of the teachers; it is really helping me figure out what my crutches are as a teacher and what I do as a human being when something is uncomfortable in life (don’t worry this will be another future post!)

picstitch (10)My weekend was topped off with some family time and sadly I didn’t take too many pictures.

This is my dad’s brother and I.  I’ve showed pics of us before and we totally look alike.  Same nose.  Same mouth.  Lol.  My aunt and uncle live in Indianapolis so we don’t seen them often and unfortunately my aunt is dealing with my stressful health issues so it was really fun seeing them.

We laugh, eat food, talk about anything and everything. But I will note that we had horrendous service at Middleton Tavern. I will spare the details, but let’s just say we (the family) might be putting a posting on yelp.

Regardless- wonderful times as always and I miss them already!!!  I definitely am feeling like there is not enough time to spend being with all the people I love.

There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love.  When we are afraid, we pull back from life.  When we are in love, we open to all that life had to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance.  We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all out glory and imperfections.  If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create.  Evolution and all hopes for a better worlds rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.   ~John Lennon

picstitch (13)What are you plans for the week? Here are some tips: drink more water and add some lemon or lime, go to bed early, leave your cell phone in the car when having dinner with a friend, do some yoga on your own at home, put cucumbers on your eyes and lay down with your legs up the wall, call your parents, eat kale, smile, be in the moment, listen.

20 Jan

Hi my favorite people- TGIF!!  I don’t know about you, but I am more than pleased that it’s the weekend.  And I have zero plans.  Happy as a clam.   What about you?  I hope you had a fabulous week and have an even better weekend waiting for you.

Here’s a guest post from my girl Thais!

thais2

thaisSometimes I wonder why I love yoga so much. It’s anything but easy, the progress is slow, some poses are borderline crazy, and everyday my body’s needs are different. The catch is, despite all of that, yoga isn’t really about the asanas but about connecting with the breath. Who would’ve thought. But fact of the matter is, yoga saved my life.

thais 3I am one of those people who lived the majority of my life completely disconnected from my body. Only after I started therapy did I realize how much I believed that the body was simply a slave of the mind rather than a tool for happiness. So I went to yoga to seek reconnection. After each class I left the studio with such a state of happiness, which I dubbed as a “yoga high”, that I just had to go back time and time again. Initially I only practiced yoga on my mat. I learned to enjoy the breath. I learned patience and persistence. I learned the joys of a good sweaty detox class. I learned that just because I can touch my toes does not mean I am in any way shape or form “better”. Eventually I noticed these lessons started following me around off the mat. I became more observant of how inflexible my mind was to change. I realized I carried tension with me for no reason. I started to become more compassionate with myself.

thais4Above all, the most important thing I’ve learned with my yoga practice is the power of the intention. If we do not set an intention before our practice, we tend to bring the same neurosis we have off the mat, on the matt. We must make it a point to let go, to breathe, to be ok with where we are, etc, when we practice. It’s my sincerest belief that without mindful intention, yoga is no different than gymnastics. This component of the practice is what creates change in the way we lead our lives. It’s what helped me express myself in a different way. Slowly but surely I am more positive, more open to life. All because I chose to approach yoga consciously and with great care. So of course, with such a love for the practice I had to go through teacher training. I wanted to learn everything I could about this world that I was just dipping my toes in. 200 hours later, I still feel like I am just skimming the surface of a beautiful ancient practice. There is so much more to yoga than just postures!!

thais1The more I learn, the more I want to share my knowledge. Eventually I want to teach yoga full time, just like our dear Camille does. We shall see what life has in store for me. After all that, what I am trying to say is – DO MORE YOGA! Whether it’s off the mat, or on the mat, I cannot encourage you enough to honor your practice. Maybe you practice to perfect your natarajasana (one of my favorite poses), or maybe you practice to get away from the craziness of life. Regardless of the reason, regardless of the actual practice, regardless of how successful you are, the point is just do it. Set an intention and go after your dreams. You’d be surprised at how nurturing the world is for those who find happiness in being.

Life can be found only in the present moment.  The past is gone, the future is not yet here, and if we do not go back to ourselves in the present moment, we cannot be in touch with life.  ~Thich Nhat Hanh

Hi my favorite people- how was your weekend? I have nothing too exciting to report to you.  Throats killing me and well- I’m under the weather.  Bleh.  No one likes being sick.  It’s probably because of the weather.  15 degrees one day and 67 the next.  Crazy I tell you.  And my granny would probably say it’s because I wasn’t wearing enough clothes! Winking smile  Did you all have a nice weekend?

I wanted to address briefly the NY times article about yoga wrecking your body

As always as a disclaimer I am not a doctor or healthcare professional.  These are solely my own opinions and beliefs as an experienced yoga teacher.

There are several things to take away from this article.  Like all physical activity, there are chances that you can become injured.  The more yoga becomes popular (meaning the more students there are) means that there are higher percentages of injuries.  It’s simple really.  But just like with all athletic activity- if you push yourself past your edge you risk injury.

I have written about yoga etiquette before and discussed that all parties must take responsibility- meaning that the student should research the class that’s appropriate for them and the teacher should be instructing and teacher the poses at a level that’s appropriate for the students attending the class. You have to be aware of your own body and your own limitations (whatever they may be)

In yoga we talk about Yamas and the Niyamas which are basically like the do’s and don’ts of how to’s of living an ethical and skillful life.  Number one on the list is ahimsa which means non-harming- non causing harm to ourselves or others.

If your hamstring is hurting you- you’re going too far.  If you have a previous injury- i.e. your shoulder has come out of the socket- it’s not safe for you to do a headstand or shoulderstand if you have no strength in that arm and shoulder.  So if you are keeping ahimsa in mind, you would hopefully be less likely to stress or strain the muscles in your body.  However, your teacher should also have the knowledge and experience of the appropriate assists and be capable of  guiding you into the pose at multiple levels, starting at the most basic level.  Modifications should always be offered for those that cannot reach the furthest expression of the pose.

Yoga is about mind body awareness.  Being aware of how your body  moves and feels and linking/synching it with your breath.  If you are fighting to get into a pose because you want to impress someone (including yourself) you’re letting your own ego  get in the way.  As someone who has been blessed with flexibility their entire life, I have learned the hard way to not always push myself just because I can.  I am still now currently recovering from a foot injury from the summer as well as a knee injury.  And even though I want to physically practice something intense every day, I simply can’t.  And that took a lot of time for me to be OK with that.  That’s just the way it is.  And if you want to impress yourself, your friends, the teacher, whoever; you have the wrong idea about what yoga is really about.  It’s not about being competitive.  It’s about how you can get into the pose and what the steps you need to take to get there.

Yoga is about opening to mind to how things feel.  Living and breathing and being aware of every single moment. Not about bending backwards with your leg behind your head.  It’s also not about conforming to the stereotypical ideal of what we think someone who does yoga looks like (if you’ve seen the youtube video of the girl in her underwear doing handstands when she first wakes up!) but I’m not going there right now.  It’s not about what your practice looks like compared to someone else’s.

A really fantastic response can be found here by Michael Taylor, wife of Tara Stiles.  Taylor says:

So if we’d like to trade struggle and injury for ease and calm capability, a good place to begin is moving away from the idea of advanced. Yoga isn’t competitive posing. The "how" is far more important here than the "what." If a guru tells you to push harder to match what someone else looks like or does, find another guru.  Better yet, find your self. A copy can never be so good as the original.

I’m not trying to open up a can of worms- but I want everyone to love yoga as much as I do while being smart about it.  So I encourage you to find your own balance in your yoga practice feeling please and pain and doing it safely- they way that’s right for you.  Make it expressive, creative, strong, powerful, and soft all at the same time.

So the next time you go to a class- be safe and listen to what your body’s telling you.  Listen to the instructor and follow the directions.  Modify if you need to.  And don’t let your ego get in the way ok?

Happy yogaing <3
